ASinglePetal's milky-way galaxy god/goddess series endeavors to redesign, via manga and short phrases, the reigning deities of the Milkyway solar system's planets. To follow is the examination of the newest counterpart Mercury Goddess - Iris. 2013. (later called "Iris"); it is presumably the most practised yet by its publication date, and like its planet's namesake sits in the hot seat.
Iris is by far the most intensely represented work in the set, as in the case of all the characters, the character depicts the physical traits of her planet in her countenance, guise, and pose; Mercury is the closest to the sun, and experiences the most ray related stress, as shows in Iris' figure with the closed blocking of her side-turned body, distraught mouth, and straight, open-handed arm. Additionally, her cool blue dress and corn yellow hair hint toward the Earth's moon-like appearance of Mercury.
Though, Iris' figure as a whole depicts the characteristics of her planet like other parts of the series: Rerko is bald, clad in earthen tones, and strong as Venus is seen as a smooth sphere from afar, is much like earth, and rocky; Flare is dressed in a smooth red gown like the sands of Mars. Iris contrary to the other works of the series (not including Cross. 2013. because it is clearly the deviation), has a dynamic, more symbolically represented planet in her background; which is a sudden shift from the smooth and realistic tendency, but it adds loads of wonderful colour and detail: expanding from the clearer lines, dots, and blasts of the inner ring to a quick expanding obscurity with the blurred and blended outer ring, acting much to ASinglePetal's description of this figures' crystal rainbow power.
The short text provided to aid the development of Iris' goddess figure is concise and direct, and implies that this particular set of deities have as much history as their illustrations; the text says both that Iris is the messenger of the gods, and Goddess of Rainbows, and that she has yet to meet one, Lila (of Earth). Without further story, or definition of the universe setting, it's impossible to go further into textual analysis.
Technically, Iris is the soundest example of the implemented style on a whole. The textured clothing with centralized white light per clothing segment suggests frontal light, probably of the sun, judging by the round yellow reflections of the eyes, but the crystal in her hair remains generic and immune to the same expected glare. The background beyond the planet, fore mentioned, suggests another powerful source of light (maybe the sun again) shining warmest from the top right off the planet to a faded colour on the other side, and down to the bottom of the piece, but this affecting in the background would silhouette the goddess more, and details on the front would be lost. Now, this all allowing that the goddess exists within the setting of the background, and the same laws of physics as the universe this piece was made in.
In conclusion, Iris seems to be a Disney manga hybrid; the loose body proportioning, facial hair design as manga, and colour characterization, clothing design, and theme tending toward Disney (The dress, and band to yellow hair, and pale glove-like hand makes the goddess look like a space-bound Cinderella). The focus on mythology is carried out rightly with a digital medium so that the whole could be vibrant, calculative, and consistent beyond the limits of organic options which are easier for the eye to translate into reality. The whole series is a fantastic style, a hybrid not easily achieved, but it seems to need practise and time to come into its own as the series itself shows up to Iris which ought to be the example for pieces the approach to like-styled pieces to follow.
